When a committee of the Melbourne Cricket Club met later that month in the pavilion to review the intercolonial match, it sought evidence on Tom’s behaviour. Tom’s petulance in Sydney had angered many in the Club where both he and Richard Wardill played. Whatever private thoughts they had, the members of this committee agreed to pay Tom extra money for his steamer passage, his uniform and the personal account Tom gave them for his private expenses on tour. Despite everything, Tom had taken wickets in Sydney and won games for the colony and the Club.

Three days later Tom was summoned to give evidence on another matter. He was called before the match and ground committee of the Melbourne Cricket Club: Sam Cosstick was in trouble. The pavilion keeper at the MCG, Mr Treen, listed the complaints against Cosstick:

Creating a disturbance in the Pavilion and Bar.

Threatening Mr Treen unless ‘he acted in accordance’ with the wishes of the professionals.

A disrespectful manner towards members of the MCC Committee.

That Sam Cosstick was found ‘by the secretary lying drunk in the committee room on Thursday the 1st April at half past six o’clock in the evening’. On this latter point, no attempt was successful in rousing Cosstick from his insensible drunken state.
